Radiation belts, ULF waves, and radial diffusion

Published:

Much of my research has focused on the ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves that transport and accelerate radiation-belt electrons, the population that damages satellites.

  • A new four-component, L*-dependent radial diffusion model driven by solar wind and magnetospheric conditions, built for use in radiation-belt forecasting (Murphy et al., 2023, Space Weather).
  • A statistical framework for quantifying loss and acceleration of relativistic electrons during storms.
  • Co-author on Nature Physics and Nature Communications papers explaining the third Van Allen belt and the apparent “impenetrable barrier” to ultra-relativistic electrons.
